Wood Bowl Christmas Centerpiece

Welcome to the Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop for November hosted by Erlene from My Pinterventures. I am so excited to be joining such a talented group!  Each month, my blogging friends and I get together to challenge ourselves to each complete a project or recipe that we’ve pinned on Pinterest (and you too). It’s always fun to see what my friends have created! Be sure to scroll down to the bottom and see all the beautiful ideas! Now onto the wood bowl Christmas centerpiece makeover.

There are so many inspiring thrift store makeovers on Pinterest. Like this one, I have pinned to my, Repurposed Thrift Store Finds Board. Repurposing thrift store items can save you money. My home has many repurposed and upcycled items that I use as decor.

Isn’t it a cutie? And at a price tag of only $2.99 which I thought was a steal because it was ALL wood. It had a few scratches and dings, but I knew it could be beautiful again.

Wood Bowl Christmas Makeover

Recently, I have really got into the Christmas spirit. I think I have Hobby Lobby to thank for that! All the beautiful decor and Christmas trees with their bright and shiny lights make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

With that being said, it was certainly time to get started on Christmas crafts. The bowl was the perfect size for my side table in our living room. And by adding a few pieces of upcycled decor, as well as a few new items, I knew it would be a beautiful Christmas centerpiece.

The Paint Process

My color choice for the bowl was red and white. I wanted my base color to be white, and the outside color to be red. That way, when I distressed the bowl, white would peek through, and represent snow!

The first step was to clean the thrift store bowl with Windex.

I applied one coat of the Waverly Inspirations White. This would be my base color, so there was no need to apply a second coat.

After the white paint dried, I applied my first coat of the Dixie Belle’s Barn Red.

Pin for Later!

After the first coat completely dried, I applied my second coat and allowed it to dry. I then took my 220-grit sandpaper, and sanded around the edges and the curves, exposing the white. After cleaning the sanding dust from the bowl, I applied one coat of Minwax wax to seal it.

I rummaged through my Chrismas decor bin and found these items. A small snowman and snowy white pine cones. They would be perfect for the inside of the tray. I also found some old artificial snow that I would reuse.

The white Christmas tree and the “Merry” miniature tobacco basket came from Hobby Lobby. Both of these items together were less than $5.00 because the Christmas decor was 50% off.

Adding the Decor

First, I added the faux snow to the bottom. It only took one thin layer.

I then placed the white Christmas tree in one corner, and the “Merry” sign in the other. Mr. Snowman was placed in between, I then added the pine cones.

This project cost me less than $10.00. I challenge you to visit your local thrift store and find a piece you can turn into a beautiful Christmas decoration.
