Farmhouse Christmas Sign

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at CFR!  Our plan is to put up our Christmas tree this weekend and decorate our home.  I always like to incorporate signage in the décor.  This adds to the charm and character to any room.  That’s why I decided to make a DIY farmhouse Christmas wood sign.

The Hubs and I debated this year about purchasing an artificial tree.  For the last ten years, we have always had a real tree.  After looking at some of the artificial trees, we chose to have a real one again this year.  We have a local Christmas tree farm that we visit.  You can cut down your own tree.  It just means more to me than an artificial tree, and it’s a memory made with the fam.

Diy Christmas Farmhouse Sign

On a recent thrift store trip, I found this unfinished wood plaque for $2.00.  It would make the perfect sign.  It had a small scratch on the surface, but that could be sanded out.  You can see my Christmas Centerpiece that I made from a thrift store tray HERE.

After going through my craft stash, I found a red and black buffalo check bow and a few snowy twigs left from last year. These would be perfect for embellishing the sign.

I bought the bow last year from Hobby Lobby when it was 50% off. I think I paid $2.50. Bows are not my specialty. Every time I attempt to make one, it’s a huge fail!

Using the Cricut Machine

I wanted the sign to read “Farmhouse Christmas,” so I asked the Hubs if he could create the words using our Cricut machine.  I also wanted him to create a farmhouse truck.  While scanning Pinterest, I had seen several of these trucks on wood signs, and they were so adorable!  This is what he came up with.

Adding the Stain and Paint

For my portion of the project, I started by sanding the unfinished wood plaque with a piece of 220-grit sandpaper just to smooth the surface.  I used a piece of tack cloth to remove any sanding dust.

I gave the plaque one coat of Minwax Dark Walnut Stain.  This would darken the wood and allow the wood to be seen after I distressed.  Wipe with a lint-free cloth and remove any excess stain.

The stain had to dry overnight to prevent any stickiness.  This will depend on your humidity.

The next day, I applied two coats of Waverly Inspirations White paint to the plaque.  This gave it good coverage.

After the paint dried, I lightly sanded it with my 220-grit sandpaper, sanding heavily around the curves so that the dark wood would show and really make the curves stand out.

Once the paint was completely dry, the Hubs applied the words and the truck to the sign.  He used my decoupage tool (I will link it at the bottom of this post).  It is an excellent tool and is used in decoupaging to remove bubbles.  It is perfect for helping remove the vinyl from the transfer tape.

Embellishments

With the vinyl in place, it was then time for the embellishments.  I used my wire cutters to trim the twigs and remove any pieces I did not need. Then, I took a piece of twine and tied at the bottom of the twigs to hold them together.

I used my hot glue gun and attached the twigs to the sign.  You can place them anywhere you like.

After the twigs were applied, I hot glued the red and black bow onto the twigs, near the bottom.

I had purchased a roll of old, rusty wire from eBay a while back.  It was thin, but strong enough to hold my sign.  I cut a small piece and attached it to the back of the sign with my staple gun.

Make Your Own

I used my hammer and lightly tapped the staple into the wood. Isn’t it just adorable and charming all at the same time!? Make your own DIY Christmas Farmhouse Sign. If you do not have a vinyl machine, use a stencil!

This is adorable! I love the truck! I am waiting on a stencil that I had ordered that has a truck on it so I can make a Christmas sign.

  4. That’s beautiful, Christina. I would love to get a machine. Sometimes I dream up signs, but hand lettering is not my thing!
